Copy: In a way, Daron and Debbie VanZuiden of Bettendorf were victims of the failing economy in their previous jobs as mortgage brokers. "It was very hard to get loans closed (for clients) because all the lending institutions were closing their doors last year," Debbie said. After about six months of struggling with those problems, Daron said they got out of that business and noticed one day that Java Java Espresso Cafe at 836 E. River Drive in Davenport was for sale. "So we took the plunge," Debbie said. "We figured you can't go wrong with coffee." Six months removed from one career, they now are the new owners of the coffee shop that closed last year - in part because of economics. They opened about a month ago and shortened the name to Java Java Cafe. Previous owner Len Guldenpfennig said in October that after operating the shop for three years, he needed to close. He cited higher costs for insurance, utilities, supplies and labor in addition to flooding last spring and summer that shut down customers' access to River Drive. "We decided to reopen it and try to keep it similar to the way Len had it. He had some loyal customers," Debbie said. "But we wanted to make some changes." They serve a variety of coffees and smoothies, cookies and muffins. They also have added new products and, beginning today, will offer lunch items. Debbie said while sales have done well, there is a lag between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Hence, the idea to draw lunchtime crowds with sandwiches. "We will be serving angus beef hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and foot-long brats, along with chips and a soda, which will be our combo meals," Daron said. In the future, he said they have discussed possibly serving soups and deli sandwiches during the colder months.
