CLINTON, Iowa— The efforts of a Washington Middle School teacher to integrate technology into the curriculum resulted in an anonymous donation of 12 laptop computers and a projector for the classroom.

Science teacher Nancy Witt said the district’s emphasis on integrating technology into the curriculum prompted her to use her own laptop to try to help teach the subject.

She said the students enjoy it so much, she has to “chase the students out at the end of the day.”

“The students ask to do lessons again, which shows enthusiasm, and everybody knows when you are interested you retain more,” she said.

She had students make presentations using PowerPoint slide shows and other uses of the technology in teaching science lessons. In turn, the students helped teach her a lot about the computer and have been helping each other because not everyone knows how to use the computer for the classroom projects.

Washington Principal Brian Kinney said Witt pushes the students to think, which is a key to developing the learning process.

The principal said the donation came after Witt showed Superintendent Randy Clegg some of the things she was doing the classroom with technology.  He said the word must have gotten to the right ears.

Kinney and Witt also thanked the 21st Century Program for donating a cart to store, charge and transport the laptops.

Kinney says he has some suspicions about the identity of the anonymous donor but is not certain of the donor’s name.
