TIPTON, Iowa — Tipton’s police department has caught RAGBRAI fever.

Tipton Police Chief Roger Hakeman said he has been riding his bicycle to work in uniform.

He said the public has been very receptive, so he decided to order two police bicycles to help police officers get around town, especially for the 4th of July parade and Ridiculous Days. “The biggie will be RAGBRAI,” he said.

Hakeman said the bicycles will be used when the weather is nice, but not when only one officer is on duty, because the car is needed.

Some City Council members said the money saved on gas will help offset the purchase. Hakeman is asking some civic organizations whether they would like to donate toward costs, which total about $2,500.

Travis Alden, co-chairman for the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, announced that a town meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 13 in the Tipton High School cafeteria to keep people up to date on preparations for the  event.

Tipton’s “Rolling out the Red Carpet” logo will be painted on 9th Street to be seen by riders as they arrive. City Council members and other city officials wore T-shirts with the logo to this week’s council meeting to advertise the event. The T-shirts are for sale in several businesses and online at tiptonragbrai.com.
