Iowa boys state track meet

Event-by-event report

Team races

Class 1A leader — Northeast has 12 points, thanks to a 3,200 relay win and Derek Ketelsen’s seventh-place finish in the shot. The field is close behind, though, with nine other teams netting at least eight points.

Class 2A leader — With 23 points, Monticello is the early leader. Nathan Dotterweich won the 3,200 and Jordan Williams finished second in the shot put to lead the way. West Liberty and St. Edmond Fort Dodge are second with 14 points apiece.

Class 3A leader — Mount Pleasant hasn’t won anything, but the school leads with 18 points. Jordan Cotton was third in the 400, Jessy McMullin was third in the discus and Jared Walker was third in the 3,200. Algona is tied for first as well.

Class 4A leader — Backed by Devin Allbaugh’s win and Charlie Paul’s third-place finish in the 3,200, Pleasant Valley is tied for the lead with Iowa City West.

400

Class 1A

Champion — Trevor Tiefenthaler (Sioux Central) 49.94

Area finishers — 6. Corey Manders (Andrew) 51.22

Notable: Manders’ time was a personal best and fulfilled the senior’s goal of earning a medal. “I got tired earlier than usual, but I still had my best time,” he said. “I think it’s this atmosphere.“

Class 2A

Champion — Aaron Stockstell (Mid-Prairie) 47.67

Area finishers — 11. Taelor Bohnsack 51.71

Class 3A

Champion — Chad Rutledge (Algona) 49.54

Area finishers — no entries

Class 4A

Champion — Kevin Dibbern (Iowa City High) 48.55

Area finishers — 7. Blake Irwin (Pleasant Valley) 49.88, 16. Matt Leal (Davenport West) 51.33.

Notable: Just 1.46 seconds separated the top nine finishers. The all-time state record holder in the event — Calvin Davis (47.01) — also went to Iowa City High.

3,200

Class 1A

Champion — Nathan Gaunt (Griswold) 9:52.02

Area finishers — 3. Drew Sikkema 10:05.08

Notable: Sikkema hurried off the field after the race. He had to drive to Iowa City that night for this morning’s district golf meet at Pleasant Valley Golf Course.

Class 2A

Champion — Nathan Dotterweich (Monticello) 9:29.42

Area finishers — 3. Eric Thien (Tipton) 9:41.97, 4. Casey Robertson (Columbus) 9:43.06, 9. Sam Chaney (Columbus) 9:57.24, 11. Brandt Moore (Bellevue) 10:05.38, 14. Danny Froeschle (Assumption) 10:19.31.

Notable: Thien chased down Robertson in the final 100 meters. Thien’s finish was more than 13 seconds faster than his previous best. Robertson finished behind Chaney at last weekend’s district meet.

Class 3A

Champion — Evan Selsor (Winterset) 9:34.75

Area finishers — no entries

Notable: This marked the first time a freshman had won the event since 1992.

Class 4A

Champion — Devin Allbaugh (Pleasant Valley) 9:20.88

Area finishers — 3. Charlie Paul (Pleasant Valley) 9:34.55, 9. Nick Young (Bettendorf) 9:45.7.

3,200 relay

Class 1A

Champion — Northeast (Shaun Eberhart, Jordan Howe, Baron Loots, Ryan Krogmann) 8:09.99

Area finishers — no other entries

Notable: Northeast finished second last year to BCLUW Conrad, which also clocked in at 8:09.99. BCLUW took fifth Thursday.

Class 2A

Champion — West Liberty (Ethan Yoder, Joe Heckman, Ty Nortman, Kasey Wiele) 8:00.89

Area finishers — 5. Wilton 8:13.81, 17. Tipton 8:31.7.

Notable: Wilton had the state’s best qualifying time in 2A with 8:12.13. West Liberty’s district time was 8:14.58.

Class 3A

Champion — Spirit Lake 8:00.66

Area finishers — 20. Central DeWitt 8:38.74

Class 4A

Champion — Waukee 7:53.52.

Area finishers — 5. Pleasant Valley 7:57.94, 14. Clinton 8:11.78, 15. North Scott 8:12.27.

Notable: Waukee won, despite running in the first — and theoretically slower — heat. Pleasant Valley won the event at the Drake Relays, but that was with Blake Irwin anchoring.

High jump

Class 3A

Champion — Colten Kelly (Anamosa) 6-11

Area finishers — 8. Michael Burke (Central DeWitt) 6-0

Notable: Kelly’s mark won by 5 inches and broke the previous 3A record of 6-10½.

Class 4A

Champion — TrayVonn Wright (Waterloo West) 6-10

Area finishers — no entries

Notable: Wright’s jump was 2 inches off the Class 4A meet record, but his mark was 4 inches better than last year’s winner.

Long jump

Class 1A

Champion — Zach Bennington (Central Elkader) 22-2½

Area finishers — no entries

Class 2A

Champion — Nick Pulscher (Sheldon) 21-7½

Area finishers — 5. Justin Meyers (West Liberty) 20-10¾, 22. Danny Johnson (Wapello) 18-6¾.

Notable: Not every state effort is what an athlete hopes. Just a sophomore, Johnson twice scratched and his best jump Thursday was more than 2 feet shorter than his district leap.

“It didn’t feel good at all,” he said of his jumps. “It’s not what I expect, and I’m kind of disappointed.“

He already has the skill to approach 21 feet so a strong showing a year from now is more than likely.

Shot put

Class 1A

Champion — Andrew Simons (West Lyon) 53-1½

Area finishers — 7. Derek Ketelsen (Northeast) 48-5¼

Class 2A

Champion — Ethan Tuftee (Assumption) 56-11½

Area finishers — 5. Matt O’Donnell (Tipton) 51-3½, 17. Nick Eversmeyer (Wapello) 45-7¾.

Notable: Monticello senior Jordan Williams led Tuftee after a 54-6¾ throw in the first round of the finals. Tuftee hadn’t gone above 55 since last season.

Discus

Class 3A

Champion — Wallace Carter (Centerville) 174-3

Area finishers — no entries

Class 4A

Champion — Thomas Reynolds (Iowa City West) 191-10

Area finishers — Kyle Lichtenberg (Bettendorf) 151-04, Matt Murphy (Clinton) 143-11, Ben Elmer (Pleasant Valley) 135-03.
