Geneseo blanks UT in girls soccer

GENESEO, Ill. — The Geneseo girls soccer team beat United Township 7-0 on Friday, advancing to the Peoria Notre Dame Sectional in Illinois Class AA action.
The top-seeded Maple Leafs won the Geneseo Regional and will play Morton, who defeated Pekin 6-0 in the Morton Regional, on Tuesday.
Geneseo broke open the game in the second half by scoring six goals.
Kaitlin Ebarb scored her first of two goals 5 minutes into the first half on an assist from Valerie Piekos.
The next 35 minutes of the half featured back-and-forth play and solid defense.
“We had some chances in the first half, we just needed to keep spreading the ball and the goals will come,” Geneseo coach Clark Brookens said.
After the half, the Maple Leafs scored their first goal 3 minutes into the half. The goal was scored by Piekos on an assist from Alyssa Patterson.
The Panthers made a goalie change in the 53rd minute, bringing in Hallie Lock. The change didn’t help as Geneseo added to its lead.
The Maple Leafs scored three goals in a span of 2 minutes, the first by Piekos, with the assist to Ebarb, while the second was scored by Meghan Wethington off a corner kick from Ebarb.
Ebarb made it 5-0, scoring her second goal of the game in the 58th minute.
Geneseo closed out the game with two more goals. Wethington scored her second goal on a corner kick from Andrea Bishop in the 68th minute.
Geneseo’s final goal was scored by Jessica Redicker on an assist from Katherine Rogers in the 77th minute.
“This was a goal for us, to advance in the postseason, and it was a nice win for the girls,” Brookens said. “The sectional is going to be real tough. We’ll most likely play Morton, and it will be a fast, physical game.”
Geneseo goalie Danielle Springer had nine saves.
