Sterling and Rock Falls schools were taking extra precautions Tuesday as police searched for Nicholas T. Sheley of Sterling in connection with a string of homicides in Illinois and Missouri.

The Sterling School District canceled summer school classes and put district buildings on lockdown.

Rock Falls High School locked its 20 summer school students in the building during class.

Rock Falls High School Principal Ron McCord said he felt it was necessary to take extra precautions.

Sterling Superintendent R. Tad Everett said he made the decision to cancel summer school classes after consulting with local law officials. He plans to revisit whether to resume classes on a day-to-day basis.

Everett said Sheley has a son and a daughter who attend school in the Sterling district, but declined to give their ages or grades.

“They’re outstanding kids,” he said. “We feel bad for them and his family.”

Everett said school district staff will be briefed about the situation before students return to class. He said the district is committed to supporting Sheley’s children.
