A four-run first inning is all the Cedar Rapids Kernels needed in a 10-3 romp against the Quad-Cities River Bandits on Sunday.

River Bandits designated hitter Nick Peoples doubled and scored in the first inning to give Quad-Cities an early lead but the Kernels wasted no time in getting into the game.

Ryan Groth led off the inning with his first of two doubles and moved to third on a throwing error. One pitch later, Andrew Romine brought the runner home on a sacrifice fly that evened the score. With two outs and the bases empty, a single by Jay Brossman and a walk to Clay Fuller kept the inning alive. Perez took advantage, clubbing a three-run homer off the batter’s eye in center field to give Cedar Rapids a 4-1 advantage.

Quad-Cities showed signs of life with an eighth-inning rally. Kernels’ reliever Ysmael Carmona gave up two singles and two walks while recording just one out in the inning, issuing a free pass to Ross Oeder with the bases loaded that cut the deficit to

8-3. But after another pitching change, Jordan Towns induced an inning-ending double play from Ingram to strand the bases loaded and get out of the jam.

Paul Vasquez, Matthew Arburr, Domnit Bolivar and Pete Kozma had two hits apiece. Vasquez had a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Quad-Cities (1-3, 34-34) fell back to a .500 overall record with their third straight loss. The River Bandits return to Modern Woodmen Park at

7 p.m. today against Kane County.

LumberKings 8, Cougars 0

Clinton pounded out 20 hits against Kane County.

Eight of Clinton’s nine players had hits, and seven of those eight had multiple hits. Matt Lawson was 4-for-6 with two doubles and two runs to lead all hitters.

The offensive performance overshadowed a dominant pitching performance from Neftali Perez. In six innings Perez struck out 10, walked two and gave up three hits.
