BELLEVUE, Iowa — Phone calls made from Bellevue during the weekend reported stabbing incidents in Wisconsin and Dubuque, but the incidents turned out to be false reports.

Bellevue Assistant Chief Dennis “Bud” Schroeder said Dubuque County plans to charge a Bellevue man with calling in the hoax, but no charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon.

According to law enforcement reports, a man called the Jackson County Law Center just after 12:30 a.m. Saturday to report a stabbing at a bar in Keiler, Wis. The dispatcher transferred the 911 call to Grant County. The caller identified himself as an off-duty deputy. He said there was a fight going on at Thums Up Pub and Grill in Kieler, Wis. He said one person had a knife and another had been stabbed. Later, in the call, he said the victim didn’t have a pulse and he was performing CPR.

Reports show multiple jurisdictions were dispatched to the bar and found there was no stabbing.

Not too long after the first call, the same man allegedly called Jackson County Law Center again and reported a stabbing in a bar fight at Players Sports Bar, 1902 Central Ave. The Jackson County dispatcher again transferred the 911 call to Dubuque County.

Reports show Dubuque officers went to the bar and found no problem.

Dubuque police and Jackson County deputies traced the calls and got a Bellevue man’s phone number.

Schroeder said law enforcement officers talked to the man over the weekend, and he told them he was drunk and didn’t remember making the stabbing reports. But he told deputies he had deleted the numbers in his cell phone.

“Dubuque County plans to pursue charges,” Schroeder said.
