WILTON, Iowa — After his team gave him a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth, Assumption’s Jared McIntosh gave up his first hits of the game, including a three-run home run to Wilton senior Ben Skelley. It would take another five innings before McIntosh would drive in the winning run with a line-drive single down the right-field line.

As senior Willie Argo scored from second, leaping down the third-base line, Assumption’s baseball team (31-8) found itself advancing to the next round of the playoffs with a 4-3, 11-inning district final victory.

“I am so glad I got to come through for them,” McIntosh said. “Giving up that three-run home run was the low point of the night for me. We could have easily given in after that, but we are Assumption. We give it our all every out, every inning. It feels pretty great that I was able to redeem myself after that homer and help get us one step closer to state.”

The Beavers (27-10) gave the Knights a few offensive scares between the sixth and 11th innings, but strong defensive plays kept the Knights alive.

One of the biggest Knight-savers was in the top of the seventh. The Beavers had a man on second and third with one out. Knights catcher Jake McAllister, (who hit a two-run home run to put Assumption up 3-0 in the fourth) dove for a foul ball, caught it and then threw out the runner at third from his knees.

McIntosh wasn’t the only pitching hero Saturday. Senior Jake Kent came through with five innings of relief to keep the Knights’ chances alive, striking out seven while giving up two singles.

“I think this win gives us more confidence going to the next stage,” Kent said. “It also helps boost my confidence considering, with the great defense behind me, I was able to get out of some jams and keep the Beavers from scoring. Our team showed a lot of heart and desire to win tonight.”
