FORT DODGE, Iowa — Thursday’s storm that swept through Fort Dodge didn’t quite deluge streets and homes with water from the Des Moines River or overflowed sewers.

But the afternoon and evening thunderstorms did wreak havoc on the Iowa state softball tournament schedule.

The mid-afternoon system dumped 1¾ inches of rain in a half-hour, and the Iowa Girls State Athletic Union officials deemed the downpour sufficient enough to postpone seven games slated that afternoon and evening.

Davenport West and Muscatine were among the Class 4A teams that will play their quarterfinal games today. Muscatine plays Southeast Polk at

5 p.m., and West takes on Sioux City North at 6:30 p.m.

To accommodate the Class 4A changes, Davenport Assumption’s Class 3A semifinal matchup with Fort Madison today has been moved up to 11:30 a.m.

“I was kind of expecting this, looking at the forecast,” Assumption coach Bob Matthys said. “If there’s more rain, it would just become such a mess.”

The National Weather Service forecasted heavy rains overnight Thursday, with today’s projections calling for isolated thunderstorms throughout the day.

A revised tournament schedule already calls for Class 4A teams to play semifinals at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the championship at 4:30 p.m.

Any further delays today would result in games being pushed back into Saturday night and possibly into Sunday.

“Whatever they decide, we’re going to live with,” West coach Steve Saladino said. “If you can’t adjust to adversity, you go under.”

Four consolation games were played Thursday morning, but the 1 p.m. contest between Western Dubuque and Waverly-Shell Rock was halted in the fifth inning due to lightning.

Class 1A completed its consolation bracket, but consolation play in the other three classes was canceled.

Third-place games also were canceled.

Assumption baseball time change

Amid thunderstorm concerns in Des Moines, the start time for Assumption’s Class 2A state

baseball quarterfinal was bumped an hour to 11 a.m. The Des Moines forecast wasn’t much better than Fort Dodge, with scattered thunderstorms expected throughout the day.
