Edwards cheated on voters, too

At this point, John Edwards’ personal indiscretions are a matter for him and his family. But that wasn’t true 10 months ago.
At precisely the same time Edwards denied National Enquirer accounts of the affair in October 2007, Theresa Valdivia of Muscatine sent us a letter endorsing Edwards as “the only candidate who will put Iowa’s interests first.”
Michelle Ludtke and her daughter, Kristina, made a family project out of writing letters to the editor in support of Edwards. “He is loyal, faithful to his wife, and family,” Michelle wrote in an Oct. 8 letter. A photo of her and Kristina appeared with that emphatic endorsement.
Edwards’ deception fooled them all. Count us among them. We expended reporting time and newspaper space to a candidate who knew he had no chance of winning the presidency.
We discounted the accusations in the Enquirer entirely on the word of a candidate who had actively cultivated our support for five years.
We simply can’t believe this savvy trial lawyer thought his affair could remain a secret.
Though we never endorsed him, his presence certainly changed the outcome of the Iowa caucuses, and by inference, the entire Democratic nomination process.
His private affair remains a personal matter. His public deceit does not.
