Genesis Health System's latest expansion will improve patients' access to health services while investing in the continuing development of west Davenport.

As construction crews worked in the background on a new Genesis HealthPlex, located at 3200 W. Kimberly Road, Genesis officials discussed its progress and how it will provide "one-stop" access to health services.

The $13.6 million HealthPlex will centralize several of Genesis' health services into one building, including two family medicine offices, pediatrics, physical therapy, and lab, x-ray and other services. The two-story, 43,000-square-foot building also will house a new Genesis Convenient Care.

"This is a great opportunity for us to combine services for patients, especially in west Davenport," said Dr. Kurt Andersen, the health group's executive medical officer.

It will be Genesis' third HealthPlex, joining its existing facilities in Moline and Bettendorf.

Andersen said health care providers' and patients' experiences from the other two facilities have helped in shaping the design — and modifications — for the new Davenport facility.

Among the changes, he said will be an emphasis on care teams by co-locating the entire medical team from physicians, nurses, physician assistants, medical assistants and support staff into "care pods."

"Hopefully, patients will see more of a team approach," Andersen said. He added that the care team model is not new for Genesis, but it is the first time the model has been incorporated into the building's design.

HealthPlex will combine the current family medicine practices nearby on Division Street and at 53rd Street and Northwest Boulevard as well as Genesis' pediatrics services, which will relocate from West Campus. Andersen said the move will provide more convenient accessibility for families of pediatrics patients.

Genesis will retain its Convenient Care, now located within the 53rd Street facility, for the immediate future, he said.

Kevin Rossmiller, Genesis Health System's engineering and construction director, said the building is being constructed on "a tight site," but will create more efficient space for the medical staff and patients. He estimated it would be completed by August 2018.

The HealthPlex construction team includes Davenport-based Estes Construction and BLDD Architects, with an office in Davenport.

"The second level (of the HealthPlex) is being built to have growth so we could add more family medicine in the future," Andersen said. "New practitioners are attracted to new facilities where they can practice alongside experienced practitioners."

Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch, whose family physician will move to the HealthPlex, said the project is positive news for west Davenport. "This makes a strong statement that this part of the community is equally important."

In fact, he said more development is in the works there with new housing projects. "This facility is out in front of the additional development to come this way," Klipsch added.
