Gayle Roberts, the 2012 Athena Award recipient, believes that women need to believe in themselves and in their abilities but they also need to mentor other women to learn do the same.
Roberts, who was among six Athena honorees this year, was announced as the winner during an awards event Thursday at Jumer’s Casino and Hotel, Rock Island. The seventh annual awards event was hosted by the Quad-Cities Chamber of Commerce and The Women’s Connection. The award was presented by Missman Inc.
“It’s hard to be singled out because there are so many women who deserve this recognition,” said Roberts who, as president and chief operating officer of Stanley Consultants, Muscatine, is the only female president of an international engineering firm.
In a video tribute featuring all six honorees, Roberts offered this advice for young women seeking advancement: “The best way to give back is to make the path forward a little easier.”
The other 2012 honorees were Diane Campbell, secondary director of innovation and instruction for the Muscatine Community School District; Carmen Darland, executive director of Quad-City Arts; Kelli Grubbs, owner of Victory Enterprises and VictoryStore.com, Inc.; Patricia Shouse, director of community services for Trinity Regional Health System; and Sally Welvaert, director of operations and sales for John Deere Classic.
In individual presentations, the six honorees offered their thoughts and insights on leadership, giving back and the role women play in their communities, workplaces and families.
This marked the second year that a single Athena recipient was selected from the group of honorees since the local program’s affiliation with Athena International. Previously, several women were recognized as Athenas each year.
