Stores in the Quad-Cities are among businesses nationwide that will be open on Thanksgiving.

"Business is always very good early in the morning and then we hit a lull in the afternoon, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. when people probably are eating," said Amy Stone, manager at Kmart on Brady Street in Davenport. "And then we see the wives out shopping while the guys are watching the football games. But then we are busy until we close at 9 p.m."

All Kmarts will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Toys "R" Us stores nationwide will open at 9 p.m. "Last year, we opened our stores at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, and the response was overwhelmingly positive, with thousands of customers waiting in line at stores across the country," said Meghan Kennedy, corporate communications for Toy "R" Us.

Wal-Mart stores are among those stores that traditionally are open 24 hours. However, at 10 p.m. Thursday, special sales will begin.

"Our customers told us they would rather stay up late to shop than get up early, so we're going to hold special events on Thanksgiving and Black Friday," said Duncan Mac Naughton, chief merchandising officer, Wal-Mart U.S.

Old Navy at SouthPark Mall will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thanksgiving, said Erik Kemper of Rock Island, an assistant manager. The Old Navy store on 53rd Street in Davenport will be closed.

Kemper said managers try to accommodate all employees who also want to spend time with families that day.

"They tell me what time they are going to eat and I work with them," he said. "I am very fair across the board on that. We are all working a smaller shift, making sure they can see their families. We also have dinner here for them on Thanksgiving and the day after."

Stone will do the same at Kmart, with meals both days.

Gander Mountain, a large national outdoor retailer with a store on Elmore Avenue, Davenport, will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thanksgiving.

Debbie Geisler, Quad-City marketing coordinator for Hy-Vee Food Store, said its Quad-City stores are among grocery stores that will be open Thursday. She said most of the Hy-Vee store departments will not be open all day. For example, the pharmacy closes at 1 p.m.

Schnucks Supermarket in Bettendorf, which is open 24 hours, will close at 3 p.m. Thursday for the holiday and reopen at 6 a.m. Friday.

All area Walgreens stores also are open. A company spokesman said stores at Kimberly Road and Eastern Avenue and Division and Locust streets in Davenport and King Plaza in Moline, are 24-hour stores. All other stores are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.
