A warning to anyone who dated Adam Clough's older sisters in the 1980s: You may see a bit of yourself onstage at the Adler Theatre next week.

A 1999 Davenport West grad, Clough returns to the Quad-Cities on Oct. 26 in the cast of "The Wedding Singer," the stage musical based on the 1998 Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore movie that was set in the 1980s.

"I was young in the '80s, but I still have some memories," the 28-year-old Clough said from aboard a tour bus in central Indiana. "My sisters were in high school about the time this was set, and I remembered some of my sisters' ex-boyfriends wandering around the house and kept the visual there."

His eldest sister, Cynthia, is a pulmonary nurse in the Quad-Cities; older sister Laura works for the Family Dollar warehouse in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Clough plays Sammy, the best friend of male lead Robby and the bass player in a band that frequently plays wedding gigs.

"He's a little more of a tool in this production than he was" in the movie, Clough said. "Other than that, he's just kind of a guy."

The expansion of the Sammy character is one of several changes from the movie. The Broadway show has all-original music, and it turns itself into a celebration of the 1980s with Madonna, Tina Turner and Cyndi Lauper look-alikes among those roaming the stage.

Clough grew a beard for the role and has triangular shaped sideburns, but he wears a mullet-style wig when in character.

"I couldn't live with myself if that was actually my hair," he said.

The Davenport native - his father Steve is a retired Davenport firefighter who now teaches high school economics in Cambridge, Ill., and mom Carol is a homemaker - said he got interested in acting while in high school. Accidentally placed in an introduction to acting class rather than the speech class he'd signed up for, Clough was encouraged by teacher Thomas Naab to try out for school productions.

A chance meeting at his church with some of the Bootleggers from Circa '21 Dinner Playhouse led him to work at the dinner theater in downtown Rock Island, first as a busboy and dishwasher before eventually making his way to children's and then mainstage shows.

Eventually, he had roles in Circa's "West Side Story" production and returned for "Almost Heaven: The Music of John Denver" and "Oklahoma!"

He's kept steady work with the company that is producing the "Wedding Singer" tour and operates dinner theaters in Arizona, Florida and Pennsylvania.

The "Wedding Singer" tour continues through April, and Clough plans to go back to regional theater work once it's done.

"I love working so much that I don't want to go to New York," he said with a laugh. "Very few actors actually find work in New York."

Clough said he was thrilled to learn that the tour itinerary would pass through his hometown.

"I don't get a chance to come back very often. For years, people knew what I did, but they never got a chance to see me do it and do it for friends," he said. "And it's nice to come back and sleep in your own bed for one night."
