“COUPLES RETREAT”

1 star

Rated: PG-13 for sexual situations, partial nudity and foul language

Running time: Two hours

Tawdry and tedious, "Couples Retreat" is a retread of the almost equally unfunny "License to Wed."

Even though it reunites Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, who made "Swingers" so entertaining, this seamy attempt at comedy has only a few moments of hilarity.

Dave (Vaughn) and Ronnie (Malin Akerman, "Watchmen") are married with two cute boys. Joey (Favreau) and Lucy (Kristin Davis, "Sex and the City") are just going through the motions. Their recently divorced friend Shane (Faizon Love, "Idlewild") has a girlfriend named Trudy (Kali Hawk) who, at the age of 20, wants to party all the time. She always calls him "Daddy." And Jason (Jason Bateman, "Extract") and Cynthia (Kristen Bell, "Forgetting Sarah Marshall") are unable to have a child, which is stressing their marriage to the point of a breakup.

Jason and Cynthia decide to give one last try at making their marriage work: They find a resort called Eden, which involves a program run by Marcel (Jean Reno, "The Professional"), a guru known as a "couples whisperer." They can't afford it by themselves, so they beg the three other couples to pitch in and go with them.

Reluctantly, the other six decide to help their friends save their marriage. So off they go to a Sandals-esque resort, where they end up rising at 6 a.m. to partake of the couples' therapy and skill-building program. Most members of the group find this annoying - they thought they were going to indulge in great food and drink at night and sleep in.

But the guru has other ideas. The program includes massage by both male and female masseurs, swimming with sharks and yoga lessons provided by a hunky instructor. Just as in "License to Wed," the characters are forced to endure all kinds of goofy assignments in order to better bond with their mates.

It's interesting that in the trailer, two of the main characters are depicted as cheating on each other. Those scenes have been deleted here. My guess is that those scenes were cut after being shown to a test audience that probably had difficulty sympathizing with the characters - but who knows?

The performers all are capable, and heaven knows they give it their all, providing a handful of solid laughs along the way. But it would be better to save your money for your next vacation than to waste it on this silly exercise.
