John Sharoian's pizza joint opened about eight months ago in Davenport, and he's ready for more people to know about it.
That's why his place, Johnny's Pizza and Slices, is participating in Quad-Cities Restaurant Week, happening through Sunday.
"It's a good opportunity to let the people of the Quad-Cities know we're here and to bring in new people," he said.
This week marks the Quad-Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau’s fifth annual celebration of area eateries, from casual to fine-dining, from burgers to seafood, from places in Princeton to downtown Davenport.
Johnny's Pizza and Slices is one of the newest eateries on this year's list.
Sharoian, a 48-year-old Bettendorf native, said he serves a recipe for New York-style pizza that's been in his family since the 1950s.
"It's all about the dough," he said. "It's hand-stretched and not too thick and not too thin."
With help from his two daughters, Sharoain opened a storefront, which offers only carry-out and delivery service, on Brady Street in July. His trademark is a 20-inch slice of pizza.
"In other cities, pizza by the slice is a big deal. Nobody here was catering to that market," he said. "We're very new, and we're different from every other pizza in the Quad-Cities."
More than 30 restaurants are participating by offering $7 to $10 lunch specials and $15 to $30 dinner deals. No coupons are necessary: Just ask your server about the special for Quad-Cities Restaurant Week.
The effort was started five years ago by Jessica Waytenick, Quad-Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau marketing manager, to offer an incentive for people to go out to eat during a traditionally slow time for business.
“Quad-Cities Restaurant Week is a great opportunity to rediscover a long-time favorite or experience one of the area’s new eateries," Waytenick said.
And if you ask Sharoian, it's an effort that should keep growing.
"I can't believe there's not more places on the list," he said. "Why wouldn't you be involved? Restaurant Week seems like it's for everybody."
