Davenport police officer Tim Murphy starting visiting Rudy’s Tacos in the Village of East Davenport when he began patrolling with Rudy’s regular Troy Simon a few months ago.
But Murphy doesn’t mind the three trips a week to the restaurant. He says the food is good and hearty, and he ought to know because he orders a different menu item every time he visits.
“It’s just the atmosphere,” he said. “They’re really friendly here. You can shoot the breeze, hang out and they know you when you walk in the door.”
The Rudy’s location in the East Village draws lots of regulars such as Simon and Murphy, manager John Fuller said.
Part of what brings them back is the prices. Every menu item except one can be had for less than $10 and many are less than $5. Beyond regularly priced menu items, Rudy’s also has extended its lunchtime special to run all day, giving customers a different entree every day for $5 or less. Rudy’s also has begun offering value meals that include two entrees, beans and rice, and a large drink for less than $7.
“Our saying is that ‘you get more for the peso you pay when you come to Rudy’s Tacos,’ ” Fuller said. “Usually, everybody leaves with dinner from their lunch leftovers or a snack for tomorrow.”
Fuller said Rudy’s most popular items are enchiladas, burritos and, of course, tacos. However, the restaurant offers American cuisine as well. Besides the location in the East Village, there are seven other Rudy’s locations in the Quad-City area, including a new one inside Modern Woodmen Park, downtown Davenport.
