David Hungate has been coming to Tommy's on Davenport's west side for 15 years. When he began doing so, it was on his lunch breaks. Now, he's retired and on a fixed income, but he still can afford to eat at the restaurant a couple of times a week.
"I have to look at the cost of things before I spend the money," he said. "It was good food at the right price and I just kept coming back."
During a visit to the restaurant last week, he ordered eggs, sausage, hash browns and coffee. There was so much food he wasn't able to finish the meal, but his bill was well under $10.
"My husband feeds everybody like he would eat," said Chris Jones, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Tom Jones. "Most people take food home in a box. There's too much for most people to eat in one sitting."
The Joneses are able to keep prices low, even though they built an addition onto the restaurant four years ago, because they cook everything from scratch. While it might take more manpower, the couple says they can almost always make something cheaper from raw ingredients than if they buy it already prepared from a distributor.
"We've always kept our prices reasonable and affordable," Chris said. "Whenever we've had to raise prices, we've always thought about it and made sure it was still affordable for our customers."
Tommy's specializes in breakfast, which it serves all day long. The most popular dish is The Wreck, which is fried potatoes topped with green peppers, onions, mushrooms, diced ham, cheese, tomato and a side of toast. That's all for $5.90, and Tommy's most expensive dish, chicken-fried steak with gravy and hash browns, comes in at $6.15.
The restaurant is also known for its doughnuts, which Tom gets up at 3:45 a.m. every day to begin making. He learned the recipes from his father, who was a cook in the Navy.
The tradition of passing down recipes will continue since the couple's son, Casey, wants to take over the family business and already works at the restaurant. But he's not ready to get up before the sun with dad just yet.
