$10 or less
For James Dodd of Moline, eating chicken wings at the Bier Stube in his hometown isn't as much about the food as it is the atmosphere.
He thinks chain restaurants that specialize in wings are too commercial and prefers the local establishment that is filled with German beer-themed items.
"I like the pub atmosphere, and a lot of my friends come here," said Dodd, who started off with 10 honey mustard wings during the Bier Stube's 35-cent Wednesday night wing special. "Ten is a good number to start off with and then get 10 more with a different sauce."
From 5 to 10 p.m. every Wednesday, the Bier Stube offers buffalo or plain wings with ranch or blue cheese dipping sauce for 35 cents apiece, with a drink purchase and a minimum order of six. Other sauces are available for an extra 25 cents. The restaurant and bar also offers $1 drafts of Pabst Blue Ribbon, Miller High Life, and Leinenkugel's Honey Weis or Amber beers.
"You could sit down here, literally, on a Wednesday night, have 12 wings for $4.20 and then on top of it have four beers, all for $8," said Mitchell Mayo, the Bier Stube manager.
By comparison, the regular price for an order of 10 wings is $7.60 with tax.
Mayo said the wing special draws a lot of college students, but as the economy has turned south, the pub's specials have become more popular.
"Everyone loves our wings," he said. "A lot of people come here on 35-cent wing night more for the wings than for the $1 beer."
Other specials the Bier Stube offers includes a $3 burger basket on Mondays and a lunch special that offers a brat and a side for $5.
"We know the economy is slow right now and hard," Mayo said. "We're just trying to get people to come in and give them a good meal where we're not trying to take extra money out of their pocket."
