The Main Event, located down the road from the Alcoa Davenport Works, is a favorite lunch-hour stop for its employees. Some customers come to the bar and grill so often that bartender Tammy Burns can start their order as soon as she sees their car pull into the parking lot.
“When they walk in the door, I know what they’re drinking already, so when I see them pull up, I’m getting their drinks and getting it out to the table,” he said. “Some of them, they come on certain days and we know what they’re going to have that day.”
One Main Event regular is Kenny Baumbach. He’s been coming to the establishment at least twice a week for lunch the past two years. Baumbach said he likes everything on the menu and is easily filled up every time for about $5.50. But it’s not just the prices that keep him returning.
“They’re just really good people. It’s the people that make the place,” he said. “She (Burns) always has cookies and ice cream afterward for free.”
The Main Event’s lunch-hour specials are tacos for $1.25 each on Monday, lasagna for $5.75 on Tuesday, a ribeye steak sandwich for $6.25 on Wednesday, a French dip or Philly sandwich for $5.75 on Thursday and a prime rib dinner for $8 on Friday.
All of the regularly priced menu items are $6.50 or less, and the Main Event offers an all-you-can-eat salad bar with two kinds of soup daily for $5.
Burns said it’s the low prices, combined with fast service and the family feel, that keep her regulars coming back.
“It’s a bunch of regulars, and everyone is pretty much family. Everybody knows everybody, and if you don’t, you know them before you leave,” she said. “They come in and it’s a really hearty portion, so they’re in almost daily.”
