Greatest Grains in Davenport is a lot more than a place to buy the ingredients needed to make organic meals. The Davenport grocery store also offers premade meals that are cooked with all the wholesome items you can buy to make your own at home.
Tom Jarrett has been eating at the Greatest Grains deli since the store built one when upon moving to its current location 25 years ago. His favorite items are the Hungarian mushroom soup and the perfect protein salad because the food quality is so consistent.
“It’s always been a great place to get lunch. They’ve always had great sandwiches and very healthy food,” he said. “I’ve been eating them here for as long as I can remember, and it’s always the same and it’s always very good.”
Greatest Grains recently began offering a hot lunch, which is available only during lunch hours and includes an entree and three sides for $6.99. The entree varies by day. Available all day are the meal deals, which include any entree and two sides, also for $6.99. Popular entrees are the lasagna, which comes with several protein choices, including vegetarian and spinach, turkey meatloaf and pizza.
Every item at the Greatest Grains deli is made completely from scratch using whole grains and fresh, raw foods.
“Everything’s natural, everything’s made from scratch,” co-owner Julie Martens said. “We don’t get anything in that’s premade that we just fill a deli bowl and put in. Our potato salad starts with raw potatoes.”
Greatest Grains also makes juice and smoothies, and as the weather warms up, the deli also is offering specials on smoothies. During the month of March, for example, customers can get two strawberry and banana smoothies for $5 instead of the normal price of $3.95 each.
“We try to do the basic home-style cooking without preservatives and MSG (monosodium glutamate),” Martens said. “It’s just a more wholesome-type food.“
