The pantheon of great movies in film history is vast and always expanding. Any movie fan wanting to embark on a journey to watch as many classics as possible would view such an undertaking as a daunting task. Which films are must-sees? Which can be skipped entirely? And where on Earth do you start on this endeavor?
While there's no definitively right response to these questions, PrettyFamous -- an entertainment data site by Graphiq -- has one answer. The data team turned to the numbers to rank each movie from A to Z -- that is, the best film of all time beginning with each letter of the alphabet (plus each number one to nine). The result is a list of 35 movies that span generations and genres that's sure to have enough variety to please all types of moviegoer.
PrettyFamous ranked films by Smart Rating -- a score out of 100 that takes into account a movie's IMDb rating, Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer and Audience Score, Gracenote rating, Metacritic Metascore and the inflation-adjusted U.S. box office gross. Films needed at least 50,000 IMDb votes to be included. The vote threshold was lowered to 10,000 votes in order to declare a "best" movie for Nos. 6 and 7.
Of the 35 films included, 15 were released after 2000. All but six movies have Smart Ratings above 90, meaning your trip through the alphabet of cinematic excellence is sure to be an enjoyable one.
