Puddle of Mudd has gone back to the basics for their fourth studio album, "Jack It On The Rack."
Unlike their album "Famous," the band wrote all the songs themselves this time and brought original guitarist Paul Phillips back, said frontman Wesley Scantlin.
The result is an edgier sound that still fits in the punk rock genre.
"That last record," Scantlin said, "there were a lot of co-writes and stuff. Some people were brought in that probably shouldn't have been brought in."
"Jack" is about three-quarters of the way finished, and Scantlin hopes to have it out in late September or early October.
Puddle of Mudd hasn't started playing the new songs on tour yet, mostly because they don't want them to be leaked on the Internet.
"There's just too many cell cameras around these days, so we're trying to hold back as much as we can," Scantlin said. "We want to play them. We feel bad for the fans because the Internet is skanking everything up now."
Despite their hard persona and risque album titles, Scantlin insists Puddle of Mudd shows are family affairs that children to grandparents will enjoy.
"It's just a big cool family-oriented type show," Scantlin said. "We're not up there like saying the f-bomb all day long, and we're not trying to make everybody beat the crap out of each other. We're just trying to have a good time."
