PEORIA — Alleman’s Spencer Smith and Addie Pulley had strong finishes to their varsity cross country careers Saturday at Detweiller Park. Both earned all-state honors, finishing in the top 20 in Class 2A IHSA state meet. In fact, Smith took 12th place.
“We were really happy with both of them,” Alleman coach Scott Stoll said. “They both lived up to their expectations. They both ran really smart races. They ran great today.”
Pulley, finished 19th and broke her own school record with a time of 17:46, lowering her best time by 20 seconds, “which is astonishing,” Stoll said.
Smith was in 12th place at the mile mark of the 3-mile race, and held his position, finishing with a time of 15:04.
“He did fantastic,” Stoll said.
United Township’s Dalton Martin only wishes he had been as fortunate in Class 3A. He learned Saturday evening, what he thought might have been a stress fracture in his ankle may instead be torn ligaments, or inflammation. Martin ran a 15:36, a far cry from the 15:09 he ran in Peoria a month ago.
“I am extremely disappointed,” he said, shortly after coming out of the emergency room Saturday night.
Moline’s Andrew Ellison ran what his coach Tauwon Taylor called a great race amid slow, soggy conditions, finishing 105th with a time of 15:29.
