Sorry, California. Nine California metros made the list of places with the highest transportation costs, the greatest number from any one state.
One of the biggest adjustments after moving to a new place can be figuring out how to get around, whether that's navigating tricky parking options or acclimating to unfamiliar traffic patterns. Routine car maintenance and the cost of gas are also significantly marked up in some cities, changes that new residents certainly feel in their wallets.
Using data from the Council for Community and Economic Research's (C2ER) Cost of Living Index, CareerTrends, part of the Graphiq network, compiled a list of locations in the United States with the highest transportation costs.
To create the list, a Transportation Score was created by combining the average cost of balancing one's tires* and the average cost of one gallon of gas*. This weighted average was then compared to the national average for the category -- where the national average for transportation costs has a score of 100. All of the cities and counties on the list scored above the national average. The locations are ranked in ascending order, with high scores denoting high transportation costs. In the case of ties, cities were ranked according to population size.
Nine California metros made the list of places with the highest transportation costs, the greatest number from any one state. Many locations, including major cities like Manhattan, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Los Angeles, also rank highly on their overall cost of living. However, the fact that there are four cities in Alaska on our list suggests that transportation costs may also ramp up in states where population and infrastructure are spread over large distances.

*Tire balancing used in the Transportation Score was the average cost of balancing all four tires in an American-made automobile.
*Gasoline used in the calculation was regular unleaded, not premium unleaded, and includes all taxes.
