BETTENDORF — Brent C. Vogele, 47, of Bettendorf, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 20, 2017, at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 1506 Brown St., Bettendorf, with the Rev. Jason Crossen officiating. Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Burial will be in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made toward a fund for his children’s education.

Brent was born in 1969 in Iowa City, Iowa, to Jeffrey and Marilyn Vogele. He was a graduate of Pleasant Valley High School, class of 1988. He married Valerie Sue Adomat on February 3, 1990. Brent started his career with Hy-Vee in 1985 and was working in management at the Hy-Vee Store on Rockingham Road, Davenport.

Brent was a wonderful and proud husband, father and grandpa. He provided his family with the best and never put himself first. He always dropped everything when his family was in need. Brent enjoyed traveling with his family. When he worked on outdoor projects and home remodeling, he was a perfectionist. Everyone that knew Brent enjoyed his goofy sense of humor. He loved his Great Dane, Ruby.

Survivors include his wife Valerie; his children Abbigail Constance Vogele of Port Byron, Illinois, (fiance’ Brandon Earl Kirby), Shelby Kennedy Vogele, Trenton Charles Vogele and Izabel Mallory Vogele, all at home; grandson Dawson David Vogele; Brent’s mother, Marilyn Vogele of Bettendorf; sisters, Jennifer (Wayne) Snell of Rock Island, Stephanie (Mike) Parsey of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Bridget (Darren) Dayton of Grand Ledge, Michigan; and brother, Stephen (Kristine) Vogele of Maquoketa, Iowa; father and mother-in-law, Richard and Jean Adomat of Bluffton, South Carolina; sister-in-law Renee (Jeff) Koberg of Davenport; and brother-in-law, Rich (Jennifer) Adomat of Beaufort, South Carolina, along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, and both his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Randall Henkel.

Online condolences and remembrances may be expressed to Brent’s family by visiting this obituary at www.WeertsFH.com.

MUSCATINE — Stanley M. Howe, 93, of Muscatine, passed away Friday, April 21, 2017, at his home in Muscatine. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2017, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Pastor Bruce Ursin will officiate. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at Geneva Country Club. Sympathy notes may be left for the family at lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Stanley Merrill Howe was born Feb 5, 1924, in Muscatine, the second son of Thelma Corriell Howe and Merrill Young Howe. He graduated valedictorian from Muscatine public schools, and enjoyed his friends in the Boy Scouts as well as the school yearbook. He studied engineering at Iowa State, and during the summer assisted in the design of power poles for the Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative. After graduating at the top of his class from Ames, he enrolled in Harvard Business School. He often referred to the case study lessons he learned at Harvard later in life.

Stan returned to Muscatine and came to work at Home-O-Nize Company with his lifelong mentor and former Boy Scout leader, Max Stanley. The company grew and Stan progressed as well, through 50 years of service, leading the company in many roles including president and CEO. He also served on the HON Board for 38 years holding the position of chairman of the board during the final 12. He shared his knowledge of business with leaders of industry as he served as president of Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association.

Stan believed and lived the values taught by the Boy Scout oath, his church and Rotary. He enthusiastically embraced the mission of the HON Company, in which you were a member of the company, not just an employee. He was honest, trustworthy, kind; but it was his respect for others that showed itself in how he solved problems; listen first, make a decision, stick with it to conclusion.

Stan worked throughout his life to improve education in Iowa. He was instrumental to the success of the Iowa State Foundation through the Industrial Advisory Council of the College of Engineering. Although not a Hawkeye as a youth, he became a key player in the development of the University of Iowa Business School. He served on the Board of Visitors to the Business School and taught classes. He also actively advised private schools in many ways, including membership in the Council of Independent Colleges.

Stan loved his family, his work, his community. He was a member of Rotary, Elks, Thirty Three Club and 10 a.m. Coffee Club at the bank. He held positions on several local boards such as Iowa Wesleyan College board, Musser Library Board and Muscatine Power and Water Board. In his later years, he focused on his dream to create an attractive and useful downtown Muscatine by renovating many of its historic structures. He also loved summers at the family lake cottage, travel, bridge, reading and visiting his children at their homes in various parts of the country.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Howe, one daughter Jan O’Callahan of Mercer Island, Washington, and her husband, Tom. Three sons, Thomas of Normal, Illinois, and his wife Ellen. Steve of Lexington, Kentucky, and his wife, Jill, James of Cumming, Georgia, and his wife Rebecca: five grandchildren, Kelly, Brian and Molly O’Callahan of Washington, Addison and Parker Howe of Cumming. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dayton Howe of DeWitt, Iowa.

DAVENPORT -- David R. Wallerich, 61, of Davenport, passed away Tuesday, April 18, at Genesis East Hospital. Mr. Wallerich, a lifelong member of Laborers’ Union 309, had been ill for quite some time. Runge Mortuary and Crematory is in charge of cremation. Inurnment will be during a private service at Davenport Memorial Cemetery.

Born in DeWitt, Iowa, on July 30, 1955, David and his family lived on the family farm near McCausland, Iowa. Tragically, his father was killed in a tractor accident in 1958. His mother, three brothers and two sisters had to leave the farm, eventually settling in Davenport in 1964.

David was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the company of his beloved dogs throughout his adult years. He was a loyal friend and would also happily help strangers he encountered with car problems along the road in our pre-cellphone world.

David is survived by his brothers Kerry (Linda) and Elmer “Biff” (Helen) and many wonderful nieces and nephews. A special mention to his friend since childhood, Henry, who helped David so often over the years, especially in recent months during frequent visits to doctors and to the hospital.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Emma, brothers Bert and Gary, and sisters Sandy Mumm and Diana Walker.

A memorial lunch with family and friends will be set at a future date.

As a child, Rita lost her beloved parents within months of each other and was orphaned by the age of 11. This deep hurt shaped who she was and formed in her a strong strength of character that was unmatched. She was the very definition of an overcomer. She was tough but not hard, sassy but humble. She got the better of this life. The space in her heart that was left by the loss of her parents she filled by loving her children and grandchildren with an incredibly great love. Along with having a successful career and raising a family she traveled the world. In her life she traveled to forty-eight states and many different countries. She saw everything from The Northern Lights to the Eiffel Tower. From a small town farmer’s daughter to a great adventurer. Rita led a big and busy life into her later years. She was an active member of St. John’s Methodist Church, loved Iowa Hawkeye Basketball and playing cards. She was always there for her grandchildren and to them she was and will always be Home.

Those left to honor her memory include sons, Bruce, Brian and Brad (Esther); grandchildren, Mike (Raquel), Lisa, Cory (Megan), Nicole (Larry), Ashton (Stephen) and Patrick. Great Grandchildren Elijah, Samuel, Angelica, Zoe, Bella, Jackson, Ava and Josephine.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sister, DeEtte, and brother, Edwin "Pete."

ELDRIDGE - John M. Higgins Sr., 89, of Eldridge, died Thursday, April 20, 2017, after a brief stay at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf on the date of his 70th anniversary with his beloved wife, Sarah.

DAVENPORT — Joseph K. Hanson Jr., 88, of Moline, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2017, at the Kahl Home, Davenport surrounded by his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 24, 2017, at Sacred Heart Church, Moline.

Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111 1st St. A, Moline with a Christian Wake service at 5 p.m. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 246, Moline. Memorials may be made to St. Catherine University, St. Paul, Minnesota, Sacred Heart Church or Seton School.

Joe was born May 6, 1928, in Moline, the son of Joseph K. and Gladys (Yenerich) Hanson. He married Anne Marie Spaeth on Sept. 8, 1953, in Davenport. She preceded him in death on Feb. 19, 2007.

Joe attended St. Ambrose Academy and graduated from St. Ambrose College as well as Loyola University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in the Korean War as Airman 1st Class. He most recently worked as Director of General Office Personnel and Administration for Deere & Company, Moline. This was preceded by positions at JD Harvester Works, JD Industrial Equipment Works and JD Dubuque Works. He retired from Deere & Company in 1992 after 41 years of service.

Although Joe was active in many civic organizations including United Way, Boy Scouts, Junior Achievement and the YMCA, he was most proud of his tenure with the Moline Park Board and was instrumental in the development of the Ben Butterworth Parkway.

Joe was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Moline, serving on the Parish Council and as an usher. Joe was a former member of the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club and the Outing Club.

Joe loved his annual fishing and golf trips with special friends. His love of gardening and yard work was a legacy from his father, and has been passed along to his children. He was a loyal friend and in his retirement, joined the "Lago's Bunch" every morning for coffee in downtown Moline. He was a true "people person" and was an attentive listener.

Joe was devoted to his wife, Anne Marie, and would not tolerate any disrespect from the children growing up. We were sent to our rooms in that case, and you better cancel your weekend plans! He loved to preside over the annual Green Lake, Wisconsin, vacation where at least 20 of us would gather on an annual basis for more than 30 years. There was always room for one more. Joe was happiest entertaining his family and friends!

Survivors include his children, Sara (Robert) Moore, Moline, Eda (Dave) Anderson, Red Wing, Minnesota, Joseph III (Anne) Hanson, Dubuque, Iowa, Marna (John) Bugos, Bettendorf, David (LaDonna) Hanson, Indianapolis, Indiana, Amy (David) Burgoyne, Forest Lake, Minnesota, and Pieter Hanson, Davenport; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one on the way; sister, Carla Marie Washburn, Palm Desert, California, and sister-in-law, Carolyn Hanson, Moline. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. James O. Hanson.

The family would like to thank his neighbors for their friendship, and Christine Copeland for everything she did for Anne Marie and Joe. Also, thank you to Genesis Hospice and the staff at the Kahl Home for their loving care of our Dad, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather.
