DAVENPORT — Hubert Esser XXV, 85, of Davenport, passed Jan. 17, 2017, at the University Hospitals, Iowa City, with his family by his side. Services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Cremation rites will be accorded and burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in care of the family.

Hubert was born Oct. 6, 1931, in Mannheim, Germany. He was the only child of Hubert and Therese (Lacher) Esser. Hubert attended the Humboldt Gymnasium in Mannheim. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Aachen, finishing with a master’s degree. He belongs to Bruderschaft Gotia Zerenia. He began his career with Heinrich Lanz AG, which was acquired by John Deere in Mannheim. He worked for Deere in Mannheim for 14 years, with stints in Italy and Thailand, before moving with his family to John Deere World Headquarters in Moline, in 1973. There he continued his work in reliability engineering until his retirement in 2000.

Hubert married Mathilde Imhof in Mannheim on March 13, 1959, following a seven-year courtship. He was a man of many interests: Formula 1 racing, model trains, astronomy, archaeology. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hiking, camping, canoeing and kayaking. He loved to travel, especially to the American Southwest, but his many journeys also took him to Puerto Rico, France, and even as far as Japan. He was a talented photographer and during his retirement, he made countless videos documenting all his travels. But his favorite thing of all was being with his family. Hubert always made plenty of time to be with his children and grandchildren.

Hubert is survived by Mathilde, his wife of more than 57 years; as well as by his children, Susanne (Thomas) Marier, Hubert (Eriko) Esser, and Marianne (Mike) Hartman; and by his grandchildren, Robert and Hannah Marier; Adina, Monika and Ken Esser, Caroline, Gabrielle, Cassidy and Atticus Hartman; by his cousin, Ulrike Esser-Schoch; and by his close friends Brenda and Alvin Spencer and Waltraud Martens.

The family would like to thank the staff at the University of Iowa Hospital ER, ICU, RSCCU and Palliative Care for the love and compassion they showed for Hubert and his family.

The family would also like to express its gratitude to the staff at Brown Deer Senior Living and Windmill Manor, both in Coralville, Iowa, where Hubert resided in the past months.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.wheelanpressly.com.
