Nov. 6, 1958 - Aug. 11, 2017

DAVENPORT — Funeral services to celebrate the life of Paul Alan Johnson, 58, of Davenport, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main St., Davenport. Visitation will be Friday prior to services at the funeral home from 9-10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.

Paul passed unexpectedly into Eternity on Aug. 11, 2017, at his residence in Des Moines. He was born on November 6, 1958, in Davenport as the youngest of seven children of Donald and Elaine Johnson. His family moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, when Paul was 5 years old. Following graduation from Ottumwa High School, Paul attended Indian Hills Community College where he earned degrees in computer science and home construction. Paul’s lengthy work career included computer programming with Nationwide Insurance, Principal Financial, and a consulting firm, retail grocery management at Hy-Vee in Davenport and Des Moines, and home-building with his brothers, Steve and Bob.

Paul will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind-hearted individual who selflessly gave of himself for others. Paul was always there to help, once quitting work to spend nine months caring for his dying brother, Bob. In more recent years, Paul has been a primary caregiver for his mother, Elaine, going to great lengths to meet her needs and help her participate in family gatherings. Paul could best be described as stalwart, kind, and generous. In his spare time, Paul enjoyed riding his Harley with his brother, Steve, and was an avid fan of Hawkeye football. He also traveled frequently to visit family in Tennessee, and was especially fond of amusement parks and roller coasters. But above all, Paul treasured being with family and friends.

While the family will greatly miss Paul, we find much comfort in his relationship with Christ, which was demonstrated by his generosity, constant cheerfulness in often hard situations, and selfless care for his brothers and mother over a period of decades.

Paul was preceded in death by his father, Donald, and brother, Robert. Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Elaine, of Davenport; his siblings, Donald G. Johnson Jr. and Dr. Erik (Toni) Jansson, all of McKinleyville, California, Marilyn (Brian) Williams, Bettendorf, Steve Johnson, Ottumwa, Iowa, and Janet (John) Japp, Knoxville, Tennessee; an uncle, Dr. John J. Bishop; as well as a great number of nieces, nephews and their children.

Online condolences and remembrances may be expressed to the family by visiting Paul’s obituary at www.hmdfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be made to his family.

2017

DAVENPORT — Mary L. Gruhl died August 13, 2017, at the age of 93. Mary was born in 1923 in Davenport and lived her entire life there. She married Richard F. Gruhl, also of Davenport, in 1944 at an Army base in Salina, Kansas, just before he shipped out to Europe during World War II. Mary and Dick had two children — John Gruhl, now in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Jane Gruhl, now in Denver. Dick died in 1997.

Her family was the most important thing to Mary. She loved holidays and birthdays and preparations for them. She was an excellent home baker — cookies, cakes, coffee cakes. A confirmed chocoholic, she felt she perfected the chocolate chip cookie recipe by deleting the nuts, doubling the chocolate, and under baking the cookies.

Mary was optimistic and enthusiastic. She was an avid sports fan, with season tickets to Davenport Central football and basketball games for 50 years and Iowa football games into her 80s. How she loved the Hawks! For every home game, she and Dick would load up the car with snacks and brats and the charcoal grill at the crack of dawn and head to Iowa City in a caravan of cars. Each season they joined friends on a bus trip to one away game against a lesser Big Ten foe. Mary was also a fervent bridge player, until diagnosed with macular degeneration at 62. Nevertheless, she maintained her upbeat attitude for three decades after that. She often said, “Don’t stop moving, or you’ll rust.”

She was active at First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and where donations may be made. She was also active in the McKinley and Sudlow PTAs and a member of chapter GW of the PEO Sisterhood.

Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Soller, and her sisters, Betty Sieb and Jean Youngberg. She was very close to her sisters, who also lived in Davenport. She talked to them every morning and every evening. In later years, she and Jean would hash over the Cubs’ performance after each game.

Survivors include daughter-in-law, Sibyl Gruhl; son-in-law, Jim Schwab; grandson, Josh Gruhl (Salt Lake City); and granddaughter, Emma Gruhl (Chicago).

Visitation will be Wednesday, August 16, at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Davenport. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m.
