Students nominated to service academies

Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa; Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, announced their nominations for the four U.S. service academies.

Applicants are judged on the basis of character, scholarship, physical aptitude, medical fitness and motivation. Early next year, the service academies will determine which of the nominated students will be offered appointments.

Braley’s nominations include:

Dylan Beyhl, Davenport, son of Bonnie and Randall Beyhl, nominated to the Air Force Academy. He is a senior at Davenport North High School, where his activities include section leader in the jazz band, team captain of varsity football, captain of the Science Bowl team, drumline captain of the marching band and secretary of the National Honor Society.

Creighton Claussen, Long Grove, son of Jennifer Criswell and Tom Claussen, nominated to the Merchant Marine Academy. He is a senior at North Scott High School, where his activities include varsity basketball, football, varsity cross country and 4-H.

Walter DeDoncker, Pleasant Valley, son of Jody and John DeDoncker, nominated to the Naval Academy. He is a senior at Pleasant Valley High School where his activities include the golf team, National Honor Society and honor roll.

Samuel Kuznetsov, Bettendorf, son of Danielle Kuznetsov and Alexei Kuznetsov, nominated to the Naval Academy, Merchant Marine Academy and Military Academy. He is a graduate of Bettendorf High School and attends Greystone Preparatory School through Schreiner University, Kerrville, Texas.

Brett Morales, Davenport, son of Sandra Nissen and Edward Morales, nominated to the Military Academy. He is a senior at Davenport West High School, where his activities include track and field, platoon sergeant and Cadet of the Month in the Davenport Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, National Honor Society and group leader for children’s church at Berean Baptist Church.

Samuel Wolf, Camanche, Iowa, son of Margaret Wolf and Michael Wolf, nominated to the Naval Academy and Air Force Academy. He is a senior at Camanche High School, where his activities include varsity cross country, vice president of the Key Club, president of the Thespian Society Troupe 3452, marching band and class representative for student council.

Harkin’s nominations include:

Samuel Kuznetsov, Bettendorf, nominated to the Military Academy.

Brett Morales, Davenport, nominated to the Military Academy.

Samuel Wolf, Clinton, nominated to the Naval Academy.

Grassley’s nominations include:

Creighton Claussen, Long Grove, nominated to the Merchant Marine Academy.

Samuel Kuznetsov, Bettendorf, nominated to the Merchant Marine Academy.

Brett Morales, Davenport, nominated to the Military Academy.

Samuel Wolf, Clinton, nominated to the Naval Academy.

Students are finalists in Constitution competition

Students from North Scott High School School, Eldridge, were among the winners in a state-wide Know Your Constitution competition sponsored by the Iowa State Bar Association.

Senior Alicia Miller and juniors Cody Birely and Allison Coe were selected to represent their school at the awards ceremony in West Des Moines.

One hundred finalists were selected from the more than 1,000 students across Iowa who participated in the competition. From the finalists, five students and their teachers will be chosen by random drawing to attend the all-expenses-paid Close-Up Foundation’s five-day education work session held during February in Washington, D.C.
