Bix 7 runner to speak at Orion Baptist

On Sunday, July 30, the First Baptist Church, 1101 4th St., Orion, Illinois, hosts a special service at 10:30 a.m. in honor of the Quad-City Times Bix 7. The Rev. Larry Wiese, a longtime Bix runner, will deliver a message on how the race represents an excellent picture of how every Christian should live.

Special Church of Peace services begin Sunday

Music will fill the Church of Peace, United Church of Christ in Rock Island, the next few weeks. Events begin at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday and include:

• July 30: The church celebrates the work of Christmas that continues all year with a service of Christmas music and readings. Attendees are invited to bring infant diapers and toilet paper to help the church’s food pantry patrons and others in need.

• Aug. 6: It's the church’s 17th annual Dixieland Jazz Service, with music and song.

‘Here comes the Sun!’

Music by The Beatles, and from the 1967 album, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” will be explored during a special service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, July 30, in DeWitt.

The First Congregational United Church of Christ, 520 E. 11th St., DeWitt, hosts The Beatles Music Worship Service. The Rev. Ann Molsberry will speak on the impact that The Beatles music and composers Paul McCartney and John Lennon had on spiritual and secular lives. Bowlin enjoys recital on retirement from St. Mark's

A recital in honor of Ellen Bowlin, who has been a director and minister of music at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church in Davenport for 30 years will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at St. Mark, 2363 W. 3rd St. The public is welcome. Admission is free.

Among the selections will be Michael Burkhardt’s "Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word: Chorale Improvisation and Free Harmonizations for Organ,” commissioned by the church to honor Bowlin’s retirement.

Bowlin, of Moline, started her tenure at St. Mark in 1987.

JW conventions to attract 15,000 to Rockford

Approximately 15,000 delegates will gather in Rockford, Illinois, to attend one of the three annual conventions of Jehovah's Witnesses this year, titled "Don't Give Up!"

The conventions are at the BMO Harris Bank Center, beginning at 9:20 a.m. July 28-30, Aug. 4-6 and Aug. 11-13. A Spanish language convention will also be held in DeKalb at the NIU Convocation Center on Aug. 4-6.
