RI Church of Peace hosts 17th Dixieland service

Music will fill the Church of Peace, United Church of Christ in Rock Island the next two weeks. Events begin at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday and include:

• Aug. 6: The sounds of Dixieland music get everyone’s toes tapping to the beat at the church’s 17th annual Dixieland Jazz Service. Enjoy a Dixieland band and singers. The service includes performances of traditional favorites, such as "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Down by the Riverside," and songs written by Bix Beiderbecke himself. There will also be a bake sale that day.

• Aug. 13: The Grace Notes Trio, a flute, cello & piano trio, leads the worship service and will perform sacred literature, ranging from classics to new arrangements of old hymns.

What's your prayer style?

A workshop to help people discover their own prayer style will be Saturday Aug. 12, at Grace Lutheran Church, 1140 East High St., Davenport. Led by Elaine K. Olson, the event begins at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and fellowship and the program is 9-11:30 a.m.

The workshop is intended to help anyone learn about their spiritual side, including those who are not sure how to pray, and to help people explore prayer styles that best fit them.

Olson, of Bettendorf, has spent 25 years assisting those dealing with life transitions and meaning. For more information, call Grace Lutheran at 563-322-0769.

August Healing Service is Sunday 

The monthly Healing Service is Sunday, Aug. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church, 109 E. 14th St., Davenport. Participants will be able to experience the healing power of Holy Communion, anointing prayers and support in fellowship. For information contact St. John's: 563-324-5278.

Bible camp at Living Hope Community

Living Hope Community Church, 216 W. Hayes St., Davenport, will host Vacation Bible School. It's weekdays, Aug. 7-11, and 6-8:30 p.m. The topic is "Discovering the God of the Universe," and it is for all children, three years old to 12, or going into seventh grade. Learn about creation, make crafts, play games, enjoy snacks and more. This will be followed by a program at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, that includes an ice cream social.
