Third Missionary goes 'back to basics'
Third Missionary Baptist Church, 222 W. 14th St., Davenport, hosts its annual Candlelight Service at 6 p.m. Sunday.
It is a symbolic service held every year with a special emphasis on the true meaning of Christmas. The date has been set aside "to bring us back to basics," the Rev. Rogers Kirk said.
Candles and Carols at Grace Lutheran
An evening of Advent and Christmas music is planned for 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Grace Lutheran Church, 1140 E. High St., Davenport. The event features anthems, hymns, scripture and prose. The music begins at 6:30 p.m. after an hour of refreshments. For information call 563-322-0769.
Jazzy Christmas Eve service at Trinity Lutheran
The Edgar Crockett Jazz Ensemble will be featured at the 6:30 p.m. Jazz Service on Dec. 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1330 13th St. Moline. On that day, there also is a 4 p.m. family service with a live nativity pageant, and 10 p.m. traditional service. On Christmas Day, the service is 4 p.m.
Arrive by dawn at historic Bishop Hill Colony Church
A 6 a.m. service on Christmas is planned for the historic, nondenominational Colony Church, Bishop Hill, Illinois.
The church was build in 1848 by Swedish immigrants. On Christmas morning in Sweden, the holiday begins with the Julotta, the Swedish words for "yule" and "before dawn."
The minister is the Rev. Dan Wright of the Greater Annawan Parish, and organist is Ann Larson, with special music from Courtney Stone. Readers are Terri Wigant, of Bishop Hill, and Elvin Salcinovic, from Sweden.
Visitors are advised to dress warmly. Coffee and Swedish pastry biscuits will be available after the service.
