An outdoor cooking contest designed to promote Iowa meat is being planned by the Scott County Farm Bureau.

The contest will be July 18, with the judging to start at 3 p.m. during Walcott Day. The event will take place on the south side of Victory Park in Walcott, Iowa.

The Farm Bureau's cookout contest is open to anyone 13 years and older who is a resident of Iowa. Employees of the Farm Bureau and affiliated companies are not eligible.

The deadline to enter is July 8. To do so, call the Farm Bureau at (563) 285-4632.

Contestants can compete in one of six categories: beef, pork, lamb/goat, poultry, turkey or combo/specialty. Combo is a combination of at least two of the six meats in one recipe, and specialty is any other Iowa domestic-raised product (not including wild game).

All category winners will receive $50. They also will receive two tickets and $50 to represent the Scott County Farm Bureau at the Iowa State Fair. The Scott County Cookout champion will be chosen from the category winners and receive $150 in meat certificates in addition to the category awards. Special recognition will go to winners of the showmanship, teenage and team cooking categories.

The cookout champion, all first-place category winners and winners of the showmanship, teenage and team awards are then eligible to advance to the state finals Aug. 18 at the state fair.
