Suffering from a cold, flu or sinus infection, and you live in west Davenport?
Medical help is now available at the new Genesis Convenient CareNow clinic in an unexpected location: Hy-Vee, 2351 W. Locust St.
It's located next to the supermarket pharmacy, a big help when a patient is treated for common ailments, including sore throat, earache, sinus conditions, cold and flu symptoms, bug bits, rashs, cough, pink eye (conjunctivis) and urinary tract infections.
While these clinics have rolled out across the country, this is the first partnership with Genesis Health System and Hy-Vee. The clinic is part of the hospital organization's convenient care network with a new name: Genesis Convenient CareNow.
There were no patients, yet, at Thursday's official grand opening. Genesis will open the clinic from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. weekdays, and 8:30 to 5:30 p.m. on weekends.
It is staffed by a physician assistant or nurse practitioner, and testing services include for strep throat, pregnancy, blood sugar levels and seasonal influenza.
Those who staff the clinic on Thursday included Nicole Kranz, who manned the entrance, and Julie Cabel, nurse practitioner.
Kranz has worked in convenient care clinics before, and she is well versed in helping patients sign in, or be referred, either to a primary physician for care, or to the emergency room at the hospital located several blocks away.
Cabel has a background in emergency medicine, and episodic care. She will evaluate patients, she said, adding that she likes to treat a variety of illnesses in people at the new clinic.
It's also handy to have the pharmacy next to the clinic, as patients may pick up medicine to deal with their pink eye, or upset stomachs.
The CareNow clinic will treat patients older than 2 years old. It complements services at Hy-Vee, including those provided by the pharmacists and dietitians.
It is hoped that the clinic will be a convenient service for residents, said Lori Turner, director of operations for Genesis Health Group. "Not only do we have convenient hours, we can see people before they go to work, or school," she said.
While this is the first CareNow clinic for Genesis in Davenport, there are also supermarket health clinics in other locations, including Iowa City. "We are reviewing other locations for this," Turner said.
