Bishop Hill celebrates Lucia

The historic Henry County village of Bishop Hill, Illinois, invites you to join its Lucia Nights celebration from 6-9 p.m. on Friday-Saturday, Dec. 8-9.

This Swedish tradition is based on a legend of Saint Lucia, Queen of Light. Girls in Sweden wake their families on Dec. 13 carrying a tray of Lucia buns while dressed in a white robe and wearing a crown of candles.

Lucia Nights in Bishop Hill will begin with the Lighting of the Park Christmas tree at 6 p.m. Dec. 8. Attractions include musical performances, Lucia girls serving cookies in businesses and single candles in the windows of village windows.

Restaurants will be open and the Bishop Hill Community United Methodist Church will host its annual soup and chili supper beginning at 4 p.m. until supplies last both days.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 only, a barn dance will be held in the Colony School. Admission is $5. No partner is necessary.

For more information, call 309-927-3899 or visit www.bishophill.com.
