Preserving and revitalizing old buildings isn't easy.
A lot of work is involved, not to mention money and the vision of what can be.
Tonight, the Rock Island Preservation Society will salute more than a dozen people and entities who have made special efforts to preserve or restore historic structures in the community.
The awards to be presented in the City Council Chambers will salute four sets of homeowners.
Also recognized will be the Rock Island Economic Growth Corp. for work on the commercial Star Block; the Karpeles Manuscript Museum for repair of its dome on a former church, the owner of a gasoline station for a total transformation of the property and, finally, a special award to the many residents, led by Deb Kunzi, who worked to keep the Hauberg Civic Center as a public building when the city was considering its sale.
