Hawks' Mitchell headed to Big 12

Derrick Mitchell, a reserve running back on the Iowa football team who announced in January plans to use his final year of eligibility elsewhere as a graduate transfer, will join the Texas Tech football program.

Mitchell announced his move on Instagram, posting a picture of himself in a cap-and-gown taken in front of the Iowa football complex next to a photo of a Red Raiders football uniform.

The St. Louis native initially was a wide receiver with the Hawkeyes before switching to running back. He carried the ball 27 times for 174 yards and three touchdowns over the past two seasons at Iowa.

He will join two Iowa transfers on the Texas Tech roster. Quarterback Nic Shimonek tops the depth chart at the position heading into fall camp while receiver Derrick Willies of Rock Island is preparing for his senior season after dealing a multitude of injuries last fall.
