Smith leads in Q-C Amateur final

Callen Smith shot a 69 Saturday to take the first-round lead of the Quad-City Amateur Tour championship tournament at Palmer Hills.

Smith has a two-stroke lead over Jamie Hallstrom entering the 18-hole final round today. Toby Kurtis is in third place at 73 with Kyle Yerington at 74 and Kevin Kilstrom, Dave Schurke and Tour points leader Greg Rios tied for fifth at 75.

Mark Drenth is the leader in the Senior division after shooting a 70 on Saturday.

76ers' season comes to end 

The Quad-City 76ers had their season ended Friday with a 5-4 loss to Red Top in the IABA state tournament.

The Sixers fell behind 3-0 early, but run-scoring singles by Harry Jestel, Chili Moseley and Andres Terronez tied it up in the third and a two-out triple by Moseley gave them a lead in the top of the eighth.

Red Top countered with two solo home runs in the bottom of the inning.

The 76ers, who won the Black Hawk Valley Conference title for the 27th time in the past 28 years, finished their season at 36-11.
