Fry to receive Legends Award
Longtime Iowa football coach Hayden Fry will receive the Legends Award from the National Football Foundation Gridiron Club of Dallas at its annual banquet on March 18.
Gerald Brence, president of the organization, said that Fry is being honored for his role in the game in north Texas, where he turned around programs at North Texas and SMU before doing the same at Iowa, and for his recruitment of Jerry LeVias at SMU which led to the integration of the Southwest Conference.
"Few embody the word legend like Hayden Fry and we are thrilled to honor him with this award,'' Brence said.
When Fry retired from Iowa following a 37-year career in 1998, his 232 wins ranked 10th on college football's all-time list.
Hawkeyes' Marinelli recognized: Iowa freshman Alex Marinelli was named Tuesday by the Big Ten as the league's co-wrestler of the week.
Marinelli was honored using a six-point move in the third period to erase a 5-3 deficit and hand Penn State's top-ranked Vincenzo Joseph his first loss of the season. With the win, Marinelli improved to 13-0 on the season including five victories over opponents rated in the top 10 nationally.
World Cup times set: United World Wrestling has announced its event schedule and Team USA start times for the 2018 World Cup to be held at Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena on April 7-8.
Team USA, placed in a pool with Japan, Georgia and Iran, will wrestle at the start of 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 7 as well as at 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 8 and in a medal round later that day at a time to be determined in the eight-team event.
Russia, Azerbaijan, Cuba and Kazakhstan form the other pool.
ISU's Lard earns national honor: Iowa State freshman Cameron Lard was named Tuesday by the United States Basketball Writers Association as its Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week.
Lard averaged 20.5 points and 11 rebounds in two games last week for the Cyclones.
Cyclones' Wise earns Big 12 award: Iowa State forward Madison Wise was named Monday as the Big 12 women's basketball freshman of the week.
The Greenfield, Indiana, native won the for the third time this season after scoring a career-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting Saturday in a game against Oklahoma State. She also led ISU with nine rebounds in the game.
Ehlers earns CCIW honor: Ethan Ehlers, an Augustana senior from Kenosha, Wisconsin, was named Tuesday as the men's field athlete of the week in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.
Ehlers won the shot put last weekend at the Darren Young Classic hosted by Grinnell with a throw of 55 feet, 4.25 inches, an Augustana indoor record and the fourth-best throw of any competitor at the NCAA Division III level this season.
