U.S. sled hockey team into semis
Davenport native Kevin McKee notched two assists to help the U.S. Paralympic sled hockey team beat Korea 8-0 in the third game of the preliminary round of the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in Gangneung, South Korea.
Brody Roybal tallied five points and Declan Farmer scored three goals for the U.S., which faces Italy in the semifinals Thursday at 6 a.m.
McKee has one goal and five assists in three games.
Cyclones' Long will transfer
Jakolby Long, a sophomore guard on the Iowa State basketball team, will transfer after averaging 1.9 points and 9.5 minutes in 22 games over the past season for the Cyclones.
"We appreciate Jakolby's effort and hard work for our program,'' coach Steve Prohm said in a statement announcing the transfer. "He has been a good teammate and we wish him the best.''
Augie's Orange, Ebel recognized
Augustana juniors Chrishawn Orange and Nolan Ebel were named Tuesday by D3hoops.com to its all-region teams and Orange was named an all-district selection by the Natonal Association of Basketball Coaches.
Orange, named third team all-region and second team all-district, finished second on the Vikings with averages of 15.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game during a 25-6 season which ended last weekend in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tourney.
Ebel, who led Augustana at 16.4 points per game, was awarded second-team all-Central Region honors by D3hoops.com.
Vikings' Balara earns CCIW honors
Augustana junior Matt Balara was named Tuesday as the men's lacrosse defensive player of the week in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.
The defender from Elburn, Illinois, had five caused turnovers and recorded four ground balls in a 16-5 win over Olivet last week. His caused turnovers total equaled the second-highest single-game total in Vikings' history.
Bees earn NAIA academic honors
Seven basketball players from St. Ambrose, five members of the women's team and two members of the men's team, have been named as NAIA Division II Scholar-Athletes.
Karli Atkinson, Aubrie Carlisle, Hannah Ford, Reeann McCarty and Sarah Thilenius of the Queen Bees and Garrett Faris and Kevin Krahn of the Fighting Bees were named Monday to the team.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and be classified at least as a junior academically.
