DAVENPORT — Services for Esperanza Castel Valdez Gomez, 93, of Davenport, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. today at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a prayer service offered at 6:15 p.m.
Mrs. Gomez passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport.
Esperanza Castel was born April 1, 1908, in Chilchota, Michoacan, Mexico, a daughter of Ramon and Petra (Perez) Castel. She married Jose Maria Valdez in 1929 and from this union they were blessed with six children, Lupe (Celestino) Figueroa, East Chicago, Ind.; Carmen (Perry "Merle") Ramirez, Davenport; Hope Murillo, California; Ildiphonso Valdez, Davenport; Guadalupe and Jose "Yoyo" Valdez. After Jose Maria was called to heaven Esperanza married Pedro Gomez in 1964.
Esperanza was a devout Catholic and lived her religion, never turning away anyone in need as the matriarch of the Valdez, Castel and Serrano families.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Davenport, and its Altar and Rosary Society, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and Our Lady of Guadalupe Association of East Chicago.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Additional survivors include her 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Monica (Juan) Vitela, Veronica (Jerry) Nieto, Victor Fernandez and his fianc'e9e Melissa Sentz, John Ramirez, Perry Jr. (Lisa) Ramirez, Tony Ramirez, Philip (Darla) Ramirez, Uvaldo (Shelly) Miranda, Sylvia Minor, Vanessa and Corina Valdez.
Her 25 great-grandchildren and their spouses, Juan (Laura), Krishna, David, Tracie (Jose), Jocel, Jessica, Bianca, Todd (Velma), Troy (Hope), Perry Jr., James, Tony Jr., Matthew, Mark, Marisa (Jimmy), John, Willie, Sara, Carly, Delilah, Jason, Matthew, Hopie, Kaleena and Natasha; 10 great-great-grandchildren, Jose, Jennise, Anissa, Christian, Nicolette, Mayah, Isabel, Arthur James, Isaiah and Mariah; beloved nieces and nephews and their spouses, Richard (Theresa) Castel, Sarah (Pete) Campos, Annie Montecino, Socorro (Allen) Ahrens, Alfonso (Elizabeth) Castel, Raymond (Gay) Castel, Jessie (Debbie) Castel, Esther (Louis) Janacua, Julio (Lupe) Serrano, Beverly Serrano and David (Barbara) Serrano; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jose Valdez and Pedro Gomez; infant daughter Guadalupe, son Jose "Yoyo" Valdez, sisters, Anita, Concha, Petra and Maria; brothers, Jesus, David and Ramon Castel; nieces, Theresa Castel Alonzo and Petra Castel Palos; and nephews, Juan Jr. and Shawn Serrano.
