A man was killed Friday afternoon on State Street when a semitrailer hit him after he fell or stepped from the curb, Bettendorf police say.

Authorities did not identify the man pending notification of relatives. They said they still are investigating the circumstances of the incident, which occurred at 2:19 p.m. at 39th and State streets.

Authorities hadn't located the semi involved in the accident by late Friday afternoon, but they said they didn't think the driver even knew there had been an incident.

"Our initial indication is the gentleman was hit by the trailer of the semi so, therefore, the driver more than likely does not know about it," Sgt. Rich Streepy said.

Bettendorf Police Chief Phil Redington said a witness told authorities he had seen the victim step onto the street twice before the incident. The witness told police he asked the man if he was all right, but there was no answer, Redington said.

The witness said when he turned around again, the man was on the ground, Redington added.

Police say there were others who saw what happened.

"It's still under investigation and we're trying to put the pieces together from what the witnesses saw," Redington said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
