SHERRARD, Ill. - An investigation is continuing into an embezzlement case in the Sherrard School District that began last month involving school activity funds.

Superintendent Becky Rodocker said the matter has been turned over to the Rock Island County State's Attorney's Office. She said a forensic audit has been completed, but no criminal charges have been filed yet.

Rock Island County State's Attorney Jeff Terronez could not be reached for comment.

Rodocker notified district staff and the school board about the investigation in a letter last month.

The funds were likely taken from high school activity accounts. Two employees believed to be involved are no longer with the district.

This marks the third embezzlement case in recent months in the area, with the village of Sherrard and Mercer County dealing with similar investigations.

Former Sherrard Village Clerk Marilyn Davis is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to theft for taking up to $100,000 from the village.

Also, former Mercer County Board secretary Karol Tyrrell of Alexis is awaiting trial on Class 2 and Class 4 felony theft charges and a Class 3 felony charge of official misconduct. She is accused of taking between $300 and $10,000 from the county's animal control fund.

The firm that completed the forensic audit for the Sherrard School District, RSM McGladrey, also conducted the forensic audit for Mercer County.
