The Rock Island Arsenal viaduct bridge at 24th Street and 1st Avenue is closed until further notice after an Iowa Interstate Railroad freight train struck it at 8:37 p.m., Saturday, and five cars derailed. No injuries were reported.
As a result of the derailment, the Government Bridge, leading from Davenport to Arsenal Island, also was closed.
The eastbound train was backing up westbound when it struck the underside of the bridge that leads onto Arsenal Island, said Lt. Mark Poulos of the Rock Island Police Department. The height of the train is about 21 feet, Poulos said.
The train was not carrying any hazardous material.
The causes of the crash and derailment are under investigation.
Poulos said the viaduct bridge will remain closed until a structural engineer is able to assess the damage. He did not know when that will occur.
The derailed train containers will be removed and put onto another train, Poulos said.
He said an emergency route has opened to allow vehicles to access the nearby water treatment plant.
