Scott County will host a grand opening for the new $29.7 million jail and courthouse entrance on Nov. 16, with public tours the next day.

The board of supervisors approved the scheduled opening. County officials hoped late in the summer to hold an opening ceremony in late October, but unfinished work pushed back the opening events about two weeks.

The opening ceremony for the 75,000-square-foot addition is for invited guests, with a list of about 200. The public tours will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 17.

Other events leading up to the opening ceremony include a United Way “Sneak Peak” and tours for Scott County employees.

Inmates will move in after the public events are done.

With the new jail, planned renovations to the old jail and the Tremont Avenue annex, Scott County will be able to house up to 500 inmates, up from the current jail capacity of 212.
