IOWA CITY — A member of the University of Iowa track team has been arrested after he allegedly hit another man over the head with a bottle of champagne at a downtown liquor store.

Iowa City police say Graham Valdes is charged with assault causing bodily injury in the incident early Saturday.

Police responded to a report about a man hit with a bottle. The man, who was not identified, told police another man hit him with a bottle as he leaving after his friend urinated in the store. 

Valdes told officers he hit the man because he was pushing past people and felt threatened.

Iowa spokesman Phil Haddy declined to comment on Tuesday. Valdes is listed a senior high jumper.

There is no online court listing for Valdes.
