Q. What is the status of the restoration of the Capitol Theatre in Davenport? Back in 2014, it was reported in the Times that the Gills of Restoration St. Louis were going undertake a conversion to an updated movie venue, but no activity has been seen on the site since then. Is this beautiful venue (including the mighty pipe-organ) lost to us? – Howard, Delmar, Iowa

A. We contacted Eastern Iowa Community Colleges regarding your question. Alan Campbell, associate director for marketing & communications for Eastern Iowa Community Colleges, responded:

"Yes, the plan has always been to address this in two phases with the Kahl Building and Capitol Theatre occurring once work is completed on our new Scott Community College Urban Campus. Classrooms and offices in the Kahl will be moving to the new campus so its completion had to come first.

"We're very excited to report we are on schedule to have the classroom building, at 3rd and Main streets, opened for our Spring session beginning this January. The other building that is part of the campus, at 3rd and Brady streets, will be completed in early spring.

"You might recall Governor Reynolds was just in Davenport several weeks ago, touring the Capitol Theatre as part of her visit. The discussion with her then was her continued support of the state's historical tax credit program that will be essential to the renovation of the Kahl Building and Capitol Theatre."

Question for Ask the Times readers

Ellen from Bettendorf asks if anyone remembers "Dairy Babies" at the former St. Luke's Hospital, Davenport? According to Ellen, the first baby born on June 1 received free dairy for a year. Her daughter was born June 2, 1979, and just missed out on the opportunity. We contacted Genesis Health System, the Iowa State Dairy Association and local dairies for more information. We will follow up with any information they provide.

Ads from the 1950s and 1960s do seem to support Ellen's claim. A local ad labeled "Baby Talk" published Jan. 25, 1952, and sponsored by the Iowa-Illinois Dairy, 1205 Harrison St., Davenport, pictures a series of three baby photos with cute captions. Other ads from around the state of Iowa are labeled "Dairy Baby" also were sponsored by local dairies. To view the ad visit qctimes.com/askthetimes
