Changes at Kimberly and Division

Reconstruction work continues at the intersection of West Kimberly Road and Division Street in Davenport, and a major change occurred Tuesday with traffic switching to the southbound lanes of Division Street between 38th and 40th streets. Last week, the city announced that staff had identified several items that needed to be completed before the switch could occur and before contractors could move on to the third stage of work. That stage now is expected to be completed Sept. 28 and involves widening of northbound Division Street to accommodate a dedicated right turn lane onto eastbound Kimberly Road. Also, crews will install commercial street access points, center medians on Division Street and sidewalks and ADA ramps. After that work is completed, the final stage will begin and is expected to finish Oct. 9.

Q. I am a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team. I pay extra through DISH Network for the Big Ten Network. The last few Iowa games have not been broadcast on the Big Ten Network, but have been broadcast on Big Ten Network Plus. I contacted DISH Network and was told Big Ten Network Plus is not available through them. Will the Iowa Hawkeye games later in the season be available on Big Ten Network? Where will they be available? – Betty

A. Quad-City Times sports reporter Steve Batterson covers Iowa Hawkeyes basketball. He said, "BTN Plus and BTN2Go are online subscription sites which allow fans to purchase games that are not on television. Six Iowa games – five early in the season and one in late November – will only be available to fans who purchase a subscription to watch them online and are not televised elsewhere.

"The games Iowa plays next week at the Cayman Islands Classic are only available for purchase through the online product flosports.

"The games on the rest of the schedule will be televised, either on over-the-air network or one of the cable networks such as the Big Ten Network or one of the ESPN or Fox Sports networks."

Q. Why can't the contracts for road markings start in the spring so they are usable all summer and into and up to the time it snows? It seems they never get serious about it until August or September and after that the paint is covered with slush or snow or been ground off by snow removal equipment. It shows up so late each year it seem to be a waste of money since the paint is not permanent. -- Bill

A. We contacted the city of Davenport to find out. Gary Statz, Davenport city traffic engineer, responded:

"The contractor paints the city streets twice per year. The long lines, such as center lines and edge lines, are typically painted in June and in October. Crosswalks and symbols are painted by city staff from April through October when time and weather permits."
