Q. Is the island that is just off Credit Island called City Island? — Bill

A. If you are talking about the island on the northeast side of Credit Island, maps list it as Pelican Island. According to a story published July 13, 2010, in the Quad-City Times, future President Zachary Taylor's men "spent the night on Pelican Island, a small spot in the river next to Credit Island.

"At dawn Aug. 6, 1814, the Indians attacked the Americans with sharpshooters. By the time the Americans had formed for battle, the Indians had waded across the channel to Credit Island."

Staff at the Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center of the Davenport Public Library, said, "According to our 1899 city map, City Island was located where Centennial Park is now, running approximately between the foot of Fillmore and Gaines Streets."

Other maps provided by the Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center show Willow Island and City Island near what is now Centennial Park.
