Q. There has been plenty of information on the new Interstate 74 bridge. What are the plans for dismantling and recycling the old bridge? — Dan
A. We contacted the Iowa Department of Transportation regarding your question. Danielle Mulholland, I-74 project manager for the DOT, responded:
"Iowa DOT will let a contract following substantial completion of the new bridge for demolition of the old bridge over the river. We will likely employ a variety of methods for demolition which will depend on what is the most practical for removal of each element of the structure. For example, the concrete in the deck may be sawed and removed in slabs or removed by chipping. The methods used will largely depend on the contractor who is awarded the work, as well as environmental and navigational considerations. The contractor will also be responsible for removal and recycling of the concrete and steel."
Q. What is being built on the corner of Spring Street and 53rd Street? — Karon
A. According to Matt Flynn, senior planning manager for the city of Davenport, a Kwik Star is being built on the location.
In the Sept. 21 Ask the Times, Dave from DeWitt, asked, "Can you find out if Brach's is no longer making Chocolate Stars, and if so, why? I haven't been able to find them in a couple of years."
We provided an answer based on information on the Ferrara Candy Co. website at ferrarausa.com. We also contacted Ferrara for further information. Jaime Motts, consumer relations, responded:
"Thank you for contacting Ferrara Candy Company regarding Brach's® Milk Chocolate Stars. Hearing from our consumers better enables us to continue to provide quality products and services. Consumer feedback is very important to us, and we appreciate the opportunity to respond.
"We are happy to inform you that we continue to manufacture the Milk Chocolate Stars. Most retailers choose to carry this item only during the Winter Holiday. Please tell your reader that he/she may contact us and we can try and locate them in their area."
